The 2026 Toronto Film Festival has concluded and the people have spoken by selecting "La Bola Negra (The Black Ball)" for the People's Choice Award. Since 1978, audience members of the fest have voted on their favorite film and this award has often been considered a credible indicator for the potential Best Picture Oscar winner or at the very least a nominee. Some of the previous People's Choice winners that went on to Oscar glory include "Nomadland", "Green Book", "12 Years a Slave", "The King’s Speech", "Slumdog Millionaire", "American Beauty" and "Chariots of Fire". This historical Spanish drama from directors Javier Calvo and Javier Ambrossi, which won them the Best Director prize at this year's Cannes, tells the story of three generations of men whose lives are intimately connected through desire, pain and love. "La Bola Negra" has also just been selected as Spain’s official entry into the International Film Oscar race and will be released in theaters in the US by Netflix on October 16th.
